Lung Samien, owner of Mae Tha Sugarcane Farm

Field
Notes

Jamnian Sophaphet, or affectionately known as Lung Jamnian has worn a few hats in his life. He has worked in construction in the UAE and Saudi Arabia for many years, as he proudly described his work on the world's tallest building. He moved to Lamphun after returning home and experimented with growing rice and longan before switching to sugarcane. He is passionate about propagating cane and helping his fellow villagers increase their income through sustainable, natural farming practices and ethos.

His farm, consisting of two plots of land is nestled in the mountains between Lamphun and Chiang Mai. The more northern terroir is comprised of sandy soil mixed with humus. The southern plot is an L shaped and is lower in elevation with mostly humus and organic waste mixed in. The southern plot is able to sustain harvests of the same cane up to six seasons in a row, far exceeding the average of two harvests before replanting.
